For practical purposes, we have organized Europe into two categories which are coincident with the geopolitical regions of Western Europe and Eastern Europe. The Eastern Europe's territory, which reaches the Ural mountains on the East, hosts, nowadays, twenty five countries, many of them surged after the shattering of the Soviet Union and the former Yugoslav Republic. Russia is today, together with the United States, one of the two states with largest WMD arsenals, most of them developed during the Cold War. Such arsenals have been inherited by Russia, as well as the status as a permanent member of the UN Security Council. Although arsenals got considerably reduced over the time the state already keeps a big quantity of nuclear, bio and chem weapons, and of their delivery systems. After the USSR's fall, Ukraine, turned out a country with the third nuclear arsenal worldwide, but it decided to transfer them to Russia. Today, it does not keep any WMD or delivery system. |
