New START Treaty into Force

Finally the United States and Russia have concluded a journey that began back in April 2010 and which realization was in doubt until late last year. The entry into force of the New START is a decisive step for international security as whole and in particular nuclear disarmament, setting a positive precedent for both the rest of the nuclear powers and to would-be nuclear armed States.

This treaty plays a fundamental role because since the first START expires in December 2009 the U.S. and Russian arsenals - which comprise 96% of the world's nuclear weapons - have remained without any mutual control until today. From now on, the two powers will follow the schedule established for the exchange of technical information, gun shows and arsenals inspections. The treaty is seen as a facilitator for future arsenal reductions between the U.S. and Russia, as well as a push for the ratification of the CTBT which is now the focus for community disarmament and non-proliferation.
