New START ratified, time for the CTBT

Things have not been easy for the START’s successor treaty. After one year without mutual verification between the two actors, the United States and Russia, this key step to reduce nuclear arsenals around the world has been finally put forward. The START successor treaty, also called the New START, was finally approved on December 22 at the United States’ Senate. Fortunately reason prevailed, but not without any cost.

The significance of the ratification is beyond any doubt. The original START treaty got caducity in December 2009 and after that any possibilities of mutual control vanished. This means that the two greatest nuclear arsenals in the world remained our of any official and mutual verification. These arsenals represent together approximately 96% of the worldwide nuclear weapons.

International Seminar 2010 "Disarmament and Nonproliferation: Toward the Elimination of Nuclear Weapons"

After the closure of the Seminar we can say that the targets set for this event have been fulfilled flawlessly. We managed to produce a high-level debate on disarmament and nuclear nonproliferation once again in Latin America, reinforcing what I hope will be a long tradition of similar events.

According to the NPSGLobal Foundation's values, the primary goal of the Seminar was to promote a proactive and creative role of the region concerning the analysis and actions nuclear issues with the welfare and progress of the population.

Regional Postgraduate Course on Disarmament and Nonproliferation open for registration

The registration period for the Regional Postgraduate Course on Disarmament and Nonproliferation, organized and directed by NPSGlobal Foundation, has been opened with the support of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Norway. This six month intensive course takes place in the city of Buenos Aires starting in April 2011. The course has been recognized as a relevant educational offer by the United Nations Office for Disarmament Affairs.
