Eliminating Nuclear Threats - A practical agenda for global policymakers(ICNND)

Eliminating nuclear weapons is a necessity, not a choice. More than 23.000 nuclear weapons existing in the world have the capacity to destroy Earth more than once and many of them are in alert status. If the horror of Hiroshima and Nagasaki has not repeated itself it has been a matter of sheer luck instead of succesful policies.

In spite of the leadership change in Russia and the United States, the challenges for these policies are huge. Each nuclear weapons state has to be persuaded to eliminate them. The non nuclear weapons states have to pledge not to seek or acquire them. The acquirement of the weapons by non state actors has to be avoided, and peaceful uses of nuclear energy have to be extended. This report is the work of a global independent commission of experts supported by Australia and Japan, and aims to guide political leaders through the maze. It seeks to outline comprehensively the challenges, oportunities and obstacles to be faced, and establishes clear recommendations for short, medium and long term..
