The main goal of the panel was to outline the present status of the nuclear nonproliferation regime based on the NPT, as well as the relevance of the 2010 Review Conference.
The panel was significant to define an overview of the current situation, and the key aspects to be discussed in depth during the Seminar's following sessions.
Some of the underlying questions were: is the NPT in crisis? what degree of erosion has the regime? is possible to restore the balance on the disarmament/nonproliferation equation? which would be the more difficult issues to assess during the NPT Rev Con? which would be the signs of success?
In addition: which would be the expected role of nuclear weapons states, and of non nuclear weapons states during the process? which is the international role of the nuclear armed states, non signatories of the Treaty, and how could they be included on disarmament and nonproliferation commitments? how the brand-new leadership in the US and other states could influence the 2010 results?
