U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry asked Congress Tuesday to give nuclear talks with Iran a chance to succeed by refraining from threatening new sanctions against the Middle Eastern country for the duration of the six months of negotiations.
“I don’t want to give the Iranians a public excuse to flout the agreement,” Kerry said in testimony to the House Foreign Affairs committee on the negotiations to assure that Teheran does not acquire a nuclear weapon.

The effort to dispose of Syrian chemical weapons is facing delays and an array of challenges related to the transport and the method of eliminating the chemical agents of the weapons, news reports have said.
Ahmet Uzumcu, the director general of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), said earlier this week that it would be difficult to meet the Dec. 31, 2013 deadline for transporting the most critical elements of the chemical weapons out of Syria.
“In view of the circumstances in this country, it will be quite difficult to meet this timeline,” Uzumcu was quoted by news services as saying in Oslo, where he traveled to receive the 2013 Nobel Peace Prize on behalf of the OPCW.

More than 30 months after an earthquake and a tsunami damaged Japan`s Fukushima nuclear plant a team of exports has reported that enormous resources and innovative technologies will have to be employed to overcome the complex issues still to be resolved in decommissioning the facility.
“The team also notes that the current situation is very complex, and that there are still some very challenging issues (e.g. contaminated water management, nuclear fuel removal and fuel debris removal) that must be resolved to ensure the long-term sustainability of the plant´s stable condition,” the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) report said.

The cooling of the reactor cores damaged in March 2011 still requires a constant flow of water, which circulates through the power plant basements. The water becomes radioactive after contact with the cores and is pumped to a storage and treatment facility before recirculation for cooling.
