Reinvigorating Nuclear Disarmament — Alva Myrdal Centre Annual Conference 2024
Held on June 18–19, 2024, the Centre’s third annual conference brought together researchers and practitioners to explore nuclear disarmament across disciplines. Around 140 participants attended on site, with 30 panels addressing arms control, verification, nuclear norms and other dimensions of disarmament. The meeting also introduced the AMC Data platform and presented results from the IPNDV BeCamp2 measurement campaign.
Emiliano J. Buis, NPSGLOBAL’s Project Director, participated in the session “Approaches to verification and irreversible disarmament” on June 19, presenting research co-authored with Johann Kellerman, Irma Argüello and Noel Stott.
Credible Assurance and Regional Perspectives
The joint research from the African and Latin American NDV Hubs examined what could provide credible or sufficient assurance that a nuclear weapons program had been irreversibly dismantled. It connected verification effectiveness with the confidence States place in treaty commitments and in one another’s intentions, emphasizing the role of political will, sustained cooperation and regional experience. A version presented at the conference was subsequently published as the related paper.
